MAMBRUI · KILIFI COUNTY · KENYA

A retreat where the day belongs to the ocean and the night belongs to the sky

Five rooms under some of the darkest skies on the Kenyan coast. Each one has a telescope, a bath tub beneath the lounge area, and a private minibar.

THE RETREAT

Slow days, wholesome food, and a horizon that keeps going after dark

Longitude 40 sits above Mambrui on the old dune, shaded by a single baobab and open on every side to the sea breeze. There are five rooms and no crowd. Meals are cooked from what the coast gives that morning. The pool is warm at noon and quiet at midnight, which is when most guests are outside anyway, waiting for their eyes to adjust.

At three degrees south, almost the whole celestial sphere passes overhead across a year. That is the reason the retreat exists here.

ACCOMMODATION

Five rooms, five skies

Each room is named for something you can actually find from Mambrui with the telescope waiting on its terrace. Every room sleeps two, with a bath tub set beneath the lounge area and a stocked minibar.

ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY IN MAMBRUI

Where cosmic science meets cultural soul

Three degrees south of the equator, Longitude 40 sits under skies that show both hemispheres at once — the Plough and the Southern Cross in the same night, sometimes the same hour. It's a rare enough latitude that astrophotographers plan trips around it.

Each room has its own telescope, and the retreat's private observatory is open to guests every clear night, guided or on your own.
